According to a new market research and data about the Swedish gambling industry, 16% of the Swedish population have played online casino in the past 12 months. This is an increase of 33% since the same survey was conducted in 2022.
Men are overrepresented among casino players
One noticeable trend in the data was that more men than women play online casino. 60% of the casino players are men, while only 40% are women.
However, among those who play, there was no significant difference between the genders in terms of how often they play casino.
What the survey did show, however, was that men spend larger amounts per month than women. Among men, the most common amount spent was 200 – 999 SEK per month, while most women spent less than 100 SEK per month.
Over 50 percent play at least once a month
The participants in the survey were asked how often they usually play online casino, and it turned out that 54% play at least once a month. This is also an increase since 2022, where only 44% of the participants played at least once a month.
So, not only are more people playing online casino, but those who play also seem to play more frequently than they did before.
What is the biggest motivation for playing casino?
Casino players were asked why they play online casino. The most common answer was that it’s fun to win money, even if it’s small amounts. However, many also stated that the excitement the games provide is enticing.
The majority do not know how to check if a casino has a Swedish license
Participants in the survey were asked if they knew how to check if a casino has a Swedish gaming license, and a significant 61% answered no. Among older players (aged 50-75 years), this number was even higher, with 72% responding no.
However, what the data did show was that among those who gamble with large sums each month, 2,500 SEK or more, at least just over half knew how to check if the casino had a swedish license.
43% suspect that the outcomes at Swedish casinos are manipulated
One question that participants were asked in the survey was about their trust in Swedish casinos. The question they were asked was:
How do you view the credibility of casinos with a Swedish license when you have won or lost money?
43% of the players answered that they sometimes or often suspect that the outcomes of the games are manipulated. More men (28%) than women (17%) always trust that the outcomes are random. Among those who reported playing every day, 45% always trusted that the outcomes were random.
Research method
The survey conducted was an independent market research study carried out by Reflect Företagsutveckling AB on behalf of CasinoFeber. To participate in the survey, respondents were required to have played online casino in the past 12 months and be between 18 and 75 years old. Through this screening, it was found that 1 in 6 Swedes play online casino.
