Vertical products as an alternative to sporting events

Antonio Salord Dominguez (Magellan Robotech) imparts his expert opinion on the difficult situation the global gaming industry is going through. The key, he says, is to develop iGaming solutions such as virtual games, slots, live casino and eSports to overcome the crisis.

The world economy is experiencing a severe crisis due to the pandemic generated by COVID-19. Stock markets are falling down. Even Wall Street has experienced the fastest and most intense collapse since the well-known “1929’s stock market crash.” In this very complex context, the gaming sector has been considerably affected, especially in markets such as Spain or Italy, where the virus is still being relentless. As a consequence, confinement as a containment measure has caused the closure of thousands of casinos and sports betting shops, with a deep impact on sales in retail channels. Another important factor has been the suspension or cancellation of most global sporting events, totally annulling the offer of this type of bets for operators.

However, online operators are reinventing themselves and changing their strategies, focusing their offer on products such as virtual games, slots, live casino and eSports. These products are going to be the beneficiaries of this crisis, gaining ground in the different markets. Offering these gaming modalities is one of the keys to resisting this crisis. Operators with greater adaptability will be able to overcome this global recession. As Spanish educator, philosopher and writer Miguel de Unamuno once said: “Progress consists of renewal.” This is a magnificent opportunity to do so.

One good example of this type of strategy is what we are doing at Magellan Robotech, a B2B company. We are currently offering Trident, our virtual soccer game. Based on a soccer tournament, the success of this product is in its possibility of simultaneously reproduce the events. Trident is a customizable solution, from leagues to stadiums’ advertising, with a full HD game visualization. A few days ago, we announced that Trident has been evaluated and tested for Colombia, one of our target markets for this type of product. Taking into account the current global situation, we are ready to help operators improve their offer with these products that will make them expand and enrich their portfolios in the absence of real sporting events. At Magellan Robotech, we have seen an opportunity in this crisis. We are working hard to adapt to these times and continue offering products that meet operators’ needs. Although the future of the gaming sector is uncertain, I am optimistic for the medium term. For now, we don’t know how big this crisis will impact our economies. What we can and should do at this time is stay at home, take care of each other, continue working and obeying the recommendations of our Governments.
