A single Powerball ticket sold at a Wegmans Food Market in the tony town of Montvale, New Jersey, has obtained an estimated USD 847 million after matching all six numbers in Wednesday’s drawing. The winning numbers were 15, 34, 41, 53, 56, and red Powerball 21, with a Power Play multiplier of 2x. The winner has the option to take a one-time payment of USD 363.1 million, or an annuity paid out over 29 years.
This prize is the second biggest ever got in New Jersey, trailing only the USD 1.13 billion Mega Millions jackpot won on March 26, 2024. It ranks as the 17th biggest lottery prize in U.S. history. The odds of hitting the jackpot with a USD 2 ticket are 292,201,338-to-1.
Last time the Powerball jackpot was won was August 12th, when a lucky player claimed a USD 1.04 billion jackpot in Illinois. Powerball drawings take place three times a week, on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, at 10:59 p.m. ET. The jackpot will be reset to USD 20 million for Saturday’s drawing.
Players who missed out on yesterday’s jackpot are encouraged to check their tickets, as last night’s drawing produced more than 1 million tickets worth some sort of prize. Of those winning tickets, 25 are said to be worth USD 50,000, and four were USD 100,000 winners.
How to play Powerball?
The cost is USD 2 per ticket, but consumers can add the Power Play for USD 1, which will increase the amount of your potential prize up to five times the original prize (except for the jackpot and Match 5). There is also a 10x Power Play possibility when the jackpot is less than USD 150 million.
Each player selects five numbers from 1 to 69 for the white balls and one number from 1 to 26 for the red Powerball. However, they can also have the lottery machine generate a quick pick ticket with random numbers for them.
Prizes vary from USD 4 for the matching Powerball to USD 1 million for matching all five white balls (except in California) to the jackpot for matching all six balls. Forty-five states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and, as of July 21st, the United Kingdom participate.
